The Origins of the Cha-Cha
The cha-cha, or the cha-cha-cha, is originally a Cuban dance that was developed in the 1950s after violinist Enrique Jorrin altered his compositions to make the music more appealing to dancers. Together, Jorrin’s new compositions and the innovative dancers who moved to the beat created the cha-cha-cha. The unique name of the dance derives from the shuffling sound of dancers’ feet as they move in quick steps and energetic patterns to the rhythm of the music. Typically danced to traditional Cuban and Latin American tunes, you also dance the cha-cha to music with a steady 4/4 beat.
Dancing the Cha-Cha
At the St. Paul Twin Cities Arthur Murray studio, our professional dancers will show you how to properly perform the cha-cha. The basic count of the professional cha-cha is “one, two, cha-cha-cha.” No matter the experience or skill level, every dancer will learn how to master the rhythmic patterns and dynamic hip movements the cha-cha has in store.
To dance the cha-cha, partners will perform a basic sequence starting with a rock step forward on the left leg and a chasse to the left. Then, dancers will take a rock step backward on the left leg and a chasse to the right. Dancers will repeat the pattern with their partner while adding some hip action to spice it up. With our dance instructors by your side, you’ll be dancing the cha-cha like a professional in no time at all.
