Top Three Dances Beginners Want to Learn

Arthur Murray Dance Centers We all have our own unique styles. When it comes to dance, one person’s dance style preference is likely different than another’s. Dance is a true form of personal expression. While there are dozens of dances to learn, the top three dances beginners at Arthur Murray want to learn are Tango, Swing and Salsa.   The Tango Dance: One of the top three dances our students want to learn is the Tango. In many ways, tango is a metaphor for life. The pursuit of tango is the pursuit of connection, love, beauty, harmony and humanity. The Argentine Tango is elegant, passionate and intimate. It is about power and vulnerability. Some people say they dance tango because they like the music. Others say they like the movements. Some say they like the unrestrained form of tango, while others say tango is artistically challenging. Clearly, there is something special about this dance! It allows one to express oneself in a dramatic and elegant way. One of our students said she wanted to learn the tango because tango dancers look like they’ve been transported to another world where emotions are shared through dancing.   The Salsa Dance: Another one of the top three dances our students want to learn is the Salsa. Salsa is a very popular form of social dance that originated in New York City with strong influences from Latin America, particularly Puerto Rico and Cuba. Salsa is a combination of African, Cuban and Latin music. It is one of the longest running touch dances in history. It has most likely endured because of the passionate, sensual and provocative routines, with the sheer closeness of the dancers. It's an electrifying style of dance about the relationship between two people. Many nightclubs cater to Latin dance enthusiasts so you can use your salsa skills out on the town. One of our students even got to take her dancing to Cuba. She was delighted to report, “My tour leader, a Cuban American, asked me where I learned to dance so well. She and her friends all said I dance like a Cuban!”   The Swing Dance: Swing dance is also popular choice with our students. Swing dancing is a dance style, or a group of dances, originating from Harlem, New York. The dance was named after the "swing" motion felt while dancing to the jazz music of the 1920s. The most well-known swing dance is the Lindy Hop. Developing from dances called breakaway and Charleston, swing dancing allows space for improvisation between two partners. Swing dancing is danced socially, making it an all-around great dance to learn! It is a fun way to meet people, both inside the studio and out. When asked why they wanted to learn Swing dancing, here is what one of our students had to say: “I started at Arthur Murray as a way to get exercise. My favorite dance is swing because it always puts a smile on my face and clears my mind of every-day stress.”   When it comes to learning to dance, we know that the first step can be the hardest step in dancing. Whether you’re interested in the top three dances our students prefer or another dance style, our certified pros make it fun and easy to learn.
